Redbus Harbour Exchange (HEX) incident

There was a fire at Redbus Harbour Exchange (HEX) yesterday morning which knocked out a power source and caused an evacuation.

According to one report there was an explosion at the datacentre within one of the main power sources.

The power was restored using 'fail over'. As most fuses as PSUs (power supply unit) within the datacentre were blown they all had to be tested replaced and brought slowly online in a managed process to prevent another outage.

Our own server was taken off site, had the hard disks checked and backed up in case of complete hardware failure. The PSU and all internal cables were replaced and then taken back to the datacentre and we were back online at 11:15 this morning.

Whilst we had made provisions for hardware failure, data loss, s/w crashes etc we couldn't deal with a severe outage at the main datacentre.

I will be investigating this further and will report back on the this blog.

Please accept my apologies for the disruption in service, despite the issue yesterday we still have over 99.8% uptime.
