Higher than nomral load average

At approx 13:13 pm a form was processed that attempted to send an email from the server.

For an unknown reason the Mail transfer agent got stuck in a loop and kept trying to send the same piece of email several times a second.

The server coped well, but I noticed a slightly higher than normal load average.

initially I stopped the syslog as that was hogging the CPU, and then discovered the real problem.

After stopping sendmail and clearing the message, restarting Apache and clearing the queue the problem was resolved.
